The classroom environment sets the tone for the classroom culture. We strive to ensure all feel welcomed and heard when setting up a classroom space. The classroom environment includes age-appropriate, content-specific visual material and resources, as well as student work, in a way that creates a warm, welcoming environment. The classroom space promotes inclusivity and diversity.
In person teachers can use posters that represent all cultures of people in order to ensure they set up an environment that feels welcoming. Using students’ names and pictures to decorate classroom spaces invites them to feel ownership of the room before even coming in.
Virtually teachers have gotten more and more creative in what a classroom environment looks like. One way is to create space on your learning management system for students to comment on or like each other’s work to build connections between students. Another way is to create a bitmoji of yourself and design a visually appealing “classroom” that your students see and use for navigation each time they connect to virtual learning.
